Saw Adam McKay and Charles Arnold talk about co-writing the Big Short last night at the WGA. I saw the movie a couple of weeks ago and loved it. I haven’t read the book it was based but basically its about the machinations of Wall Street that caused the financial collapse in 2007.
To me the most important aspect of the movie is that it took a somewhat complex issue that most of us don’t know anything about and made it manageable, even for someone inane about economics. By the end of the film you will probably feel outrage and fear. I know I did. I came home and broke google searching for more information. McKay and Arnold talked a lot about wanting to have that effect with the film they made. They wanted to shake us!
They also talked about the struggle of story problems and how much the worked to get through them. Knowing that people wit that much success struggle with story problems was a relief.
